Chapter Twelve: Red Wine

As Eddie reversed his car to execute a rapid three-point-turn in front of the once grand house that had, until a few minutes earlier, acted as a detention centre, Anna felt a wave of relief wash over her.

Thank Heavens we’re out of there. She checked her watch. Ten-thirty. Did that really take two-and-a-half hours?

Her joy at being free soon turned to anger as she considered where several strands of their ordeal came together. ‘Stop the car.’

‘Are you mad?’ replied Eddie. ‘We need to get away from Grey and his sidekicks pronto, and you want me to stop?’

‘I said stop the car.’ Anna glared at her companion, making it clear she expected him to comply.

‘This is plain crazy,’ replied Eddie as he pulled up instead of turning onto the main Norwich to Cambridge Road. ‘OK, what’s going on?’

‘A good question. In fact, that’s what I want to know?’

‘Anna, I don’t know what you’re talking about. You heard every word Grey said. I know as much as you do. Why the third-degree? Now, can we get going?’

Anna put her hand over the gearstick knob before Eddie could engage first gear. ‘Not until you tell me what’s going on... and don’t give me that “I don’t have a clue” rubbish. When Grey showed us the aerial photo-slides, you looked as if the world had ended. Then I asked you directly what you’re doing in Norfolk. I’m still waiting for an answer.’

Eddie reached for the ignition key and twisted it to the off position. An uneasy silence fell as the low roar of the car’s engine ceased, to be replaced by a gentle rustling of what few leaves remained on the surrounding trees in the night breeze.

‘You might well look uncomfortable,’ commented Anna as she watched his eyes close and shoulders drop. ‘This has gone on long enough. What started as helping Tom Bradshaw solve a traffic accident has turned into a nightmare of murder and, it seems, espionage. On top of which a man neither of us has ever met, or at least that’s true in my case, all but kidnaps us and pulls a letter from his jacket pocket like a rabbit from a hat giving him permission to direct you, and me, to do his bidding... and to cap it all gives us until Sunday night to accomplish whatever it is we’re supposed to do. Doesn’t that strike you as odd?’

Eddie tapped the leather covered steering wheel with two fingers of his right hand, while running the remaining hand through his blond locks. ‘What do you want me to say?’

‘I’m talking about what I expect, not want,’ retorted Anna. ‘Like it or not, whoever Grey works for has latched onto what you’re up to. That connection has put us both at risk of either being killed or arrested for treason. I’d call that Hobson’s choice, wouldn’t you?’

Eddie placed both hands back on the steering wheel and gazed out of his side window.

‘If you’re looking for inspiration, Eddie, you won’t find it out there.
